Housing Requirements

Introduction

The puppies in your store should be placed in a housing unit that will accommodate the height, length and weight of the puppy comfortably, with enough room to stand, sit and lay down without any restrictions.

Most puppies do better in the company of one or more other puppies. If housing multiple puppies in the same unit, be sure it is large enough to accommodate them. Puppies kept in the same enclosure should be approximately the same size and monitored to ensure they get along well. An aggressive puppy should be placed with slightly larger ones or in its own unit.

Many pet stores have a separate area where puppies can play and exercise with each other, or where customers can interact individually with a puppy they are considering. Domineering puppies may require additional socialization to learn to play well with other puppies and dogs and make good pets.

The area or room where puppies are housed usually is called a
kennel and the space where they live most of the time is called a
housing unit or crate.
