Introduction
Despite their reputation for being difficult to keep, innovations in filtration, lighting and nutritional supplements have made saltwater aquariums much easier to set up and maintain. The increased availability of farm raised and captive bred species also has contributed to hobbyists’ success and the popularity of saltwater tanks.
Saltwater aquariums do present unique challenges related to water quality, housing, filtration, feeding and stress factors. Setting up and caring for a saltwater tank typically is more involved than freshwater versions, particularly in aquariums with corals and other invertebrates, commonly referred to as “reef tanks.” The knowledge you will gain from this chapter will allow you to help your customers care for their saltwater tanks properly and keep their fish and invertebrates healthy.

After completing this chapter, you should be able to:
- Help customers start a successful saltwater aquarium.
